Biology is a science which is constantly evolving and occupies a significant place in our daily lives. It is important for all citizens to clearly understand questions of biodiversity and biotechnology which require a basic knowledge of biology, particularly bioethics. Biology occupies an important position in Vanuatu’s National curriculum because it has direct applications in professional fields such as the medical, food industry and food nutrition fields. Biology is a discipline that relates to problems in contemporary society as indicated in the various program headings. Its many links with other educational objectives (e.g. heath and environment) will be highlighted as often as possible. The approach adopted in this program is based on themes that students can identify in their everyday experiences, and phenomena commonly observed in nature. A fundamental objective is to enable students to appreciate the connections between seemingly different scientific topics and therefore help them to be able to integrate ideasfrom differentscientific sources. The themes include a basic structure of knowledge both in physical and life sciences. This body of concepts was chosen as it offers a broad understanding based on the organism and environment, and helps builds a foundation on which students can use for further studies
